The four driving modes deliver the same levels of comfort and low noise, which I wish it doesn’t. In EV mode engine doesn’t switch on until the battery really needs a charge and is used when the ATM shows more zeros than cardinal numbers. Sport mode does not only make the car more responsive, it also activates the engine to charge the battery more often. The Sport mode is when there is a bonus to fulfill the need for speed. It is best used just after all the bills have been paid and the ATM balance still shows more numbers after a comma and the two decimal places. The Normal mode is used to provide the best mix of motor speed and battery charging. Best used for last three days before the ATM is recharged. Eco mode also affects the e-Pedal delivering juice to the motor, with less fervor so as not to zap the battery. In Eco-the engine switches on with longer increments to maximize fuel use. There are four drive modes: Eco, Normal, Sport which is dictated by mood and wallet. It accelerates in a linear fashion-push the e-Pedal and go quickly forward. In the downhills through the parking lots, the graphic on the dashboard shows the battery is charging.Įvent organizer Georges Ramirez, said that even simply rolling down to a gentle stop, or cruising with no power fed to the motor generates electricity and charges the battery. It is called regenerative braking and it works. This clever set-up can charge the battery up to 50 percent. In this case, it is the generator that charges the battery during braking or when the e-Pedal is disengaged. In conditions like this, where the battery is used up more, the Nissan Kicks uses every opportunity to charge the battery. This can change, say when handling uphills (simulated by the steep parking lot ramps at the Ayala Mall). The engine speed is determined by how much of battery is being used up while travelling. Not on the Kicks, the small 1.2-liter is very efficient, so says Nissan, capable of 22 kilometers per liter. ![]() Nissan Philippines President Juan Manuel Hoyos with the All New Kicks e POWER Since a gasoline engine can be refilled almost anywhere, running an electric vehicle like the Kicks means no sweaty palms and tense shoulder muscles when passing the 300-kilometer mark-the usual distance before other EVs start to buzz and beep and warn the driver of impending doom. Simply put e-Power is Nissan’s response to the mental health issue of EV owners-range anxiety. This power and torque are produced on the tap-one can get its full benefits simply by flooring the rather soft accelerator pedal. The motor is a synchronous AC motor that needs 349-volts AC to turn. Now with the EM47 electric motor powering the car, it produces 100 kW (134 hp) and a massive 280 Newton meters of torque. ![]() If Nissan fitted just the gasoline powered engine into the car, it would be slow and sluggish with a paltry 60 kW (80 hp) and 110 Nm of torque. The Kicks e-Power combines a HR12DE 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine and an EM47 electric motor. There were many wonderful stories of handling, torque, climbing abilities that I just wanted to discover myself. The 15-car convoy ran nearly 1000 kilometers on a tankful of gas. Instead, I read and watched how my colleagues went about driving and pushing Nissan’s new electrified subcompact crossover SUV to its limits. Malaya Business Insight was not invited to that event. Selected media did a longer trip from Manila to Albay in Bicol in an event called the N-Ovation Kicks e-Power Media Drive. What the short drive around an Ayala Mall in the Aseana City complex did was to introduce the various facets of what the Kicks is all about. This is a very short test drive, not even the length of the time of a Korean K-drama. Can we call it an un-hybrid? Technologists categorize the Nissan Kicks as a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) with the gasoline engine hooked up to a generator and simply charging the battery. WHAT else does one call a car that has a gasoline engine that doesn’t power the car but instead charges a battery that runs an electric motor. CAPTION: A fancy AR display of the Nissan Kicks.
